Flexiform collaborated with Oberlanders Architects to transform Forestry and Land Scotland’s Newton Nursery, a tree nursery supporting timber production and woodland creation across Scotland. The transformation increased the nursery’s capacity from 7 million to 25 million trees per year and supports its net-zero emissions goals through woodland creation and a sustained restocking programme. Oberlanders redeveloped the site with a glasshouse, a standout area, and multiple buildings for machinery, as well as temperature- and humidity-controlled cold stores. Flexiform contributed by designing additional office, meeting, and ancillary spaces, enabling full operational capacity on a single site.
A key objective of the project was to bring staff together, fostering a sense of unity and providing equal access to amenities. Part of Oberlanders’ approach was to directly connect the glasshouse with the office and welfare hub, creating both a physical and visual link between field and office staff. A shared ‘mess’ room and breakout space connects these areas, serving as a central social and recreational hub that is durable and designed to withstand heavy use.
Furniture Design and Layout In consultation with the client and Oberlander Architects, Flexiform’s in-house space planning team overlaid the existing architectural drawings with the client’s chosen Flexiform furniture, providing accurate layouts and visuals to support design decisions. Flexiform’s Jemma Ryan showcased a range of products and design options within our showroom to align with the client’s goals of improving staff wellbeing and meeting sustainability objectives.
Staff were provided with Jot-Up Lite fully electric height-adjustable desks, breathable mesh-back adjustable task chairs, and upholstered desk privacy screens for sound absorption and enhanced privacy. Additional soft breakout seating and a design-led Channel meeting table paired with Papillon chairs were selected, offering a variety of informal meeting spaces.
The furniture was finished in natural colours and textures to complement the building’s green and timber exterior. Meeting rooms featured plant-based (hemp and flax) organic chairs and tables, reinforcing the client’s net zero objectives.
