Space Planning
Flexiform has completed the installation of front-of-house and office spaces for the new Oak Cancer Centre in Sutton, London. Part of the Royal Marsden Hospital, the NHS Trust sought to meet the growing demand for rapid diagnostics, advanced care, and cutting-edge research. However, its existing facilities were outdated and unable to meet these requirements. To address this, the Trust commissioned the Oak Cancer Centre (OCC), a state-of-the-art, six-storey facility designed to expand patient services, enhance diagnostic capabilities, and provide world-class research and collaboration spaces.
Flexiform worked closely with the project team to deliver furniture solutions that were adaptable, durable, and aligned with the Trust’s long-term vision. Pre-assembled furniture was used to minimise on-site disruption, both during installation and for future support.
Furniture Specification & Guidance
Flexiform worked closely with the Royal Marsden NHS Trust to provide guidance on materials, furniture selection, space planning and overall design approach. In patient and family spaces, the Trust placed great importance on creating an environment that feels comfortable and reassuring during what can be a stressful time. To support this, we recommended warmer finishes and domestic-inspired furniture that prioritised comfort and a sense of ease.
Acoustic solutions were carefully considered throughout the building to minimise noise and to support neurodiverse staff and patients, fostering an inclusive and calming atmosphere. All finishes were selected with durability, safety, and infection control in mind, incorporating antimicrobial textiles and high-performance faux leathers where appropriate.
Staff Office Space
The office space was furnished with Pico modular desks, each paired with an ergonomic, supportive mesh-back task chair, Dolly screens for privacy, and monitor arms for maximum comfort. Storage was provided by mid-height tambour units, which require minimal operating space, making them ideal for dividing work areas and fitting into tighter layouts.
Additional breakout and meeting areas were created using a mix of mobile and reconfigurable furniture, equipped with AV technology to enable video conferencing, remote consultations, and hybrid working. Agile working formed a central part of the brief, with a strong focus on multifunctional spaces that can quickly adapt to support workshops, seminars, action learning sets, large-scale research meetings, and exhibitions.
The result is a durable, functional workspace that prioritises comfort and wellbeing while supporting their world-class facilities.
